Korean BBQ places are all over Jakarta, but Oharang is pretty much the only one that dares to advertise itself as"charcoal-fired" while keeping the price down to around 100k per person. Drawn by this value for money and its"No Pork No Lard" sign[1], I went to Nongkrong there with my friends. The result… well, how should I put it? This meal gave me mixed feelings. It felt like eating in a wonderland—the smoky kind of wonderland. 😂
90 Minutes of Highs and Lows
We chose the Premium package, which was about 115k per person after tax[2]. When the meat arrived, the juicy Angus beef looked pretty good[3]. Sizzling on the charcoal grill, the aroma was truly Mantap! But to be honest, the marinade on most of the meat was either too sweet or too salty, making the flavor profile a bit one-dimensional, and the sauce options were limited too[4].
On the other hand, I was blown away by their side dishes. The kimchi and pickled radish (Kimchi & Danmuji) were sweet, sour, and refreshing, fermented just right. They're an absolute lifesaver for cutting through the grease—I could eat three plates of it on its own![5] And those Korean rice balls (Jumeokbap) were just perfect with the grilled meat[6].
BUT! Here comes the biggest problem. The charcoal fire... anjay, it had a mind of its own. It would go out just like that, and we had to wait ages just to grill one thin slice of meat.
