Honestly, before coming to Samosir Island on Lake Toba, I really didn't have high hopes for the restaurants on the island. I was just thinking as long as the food was edible, it would be fine. But when we drove up to the entrance of this place, Willem's Resto, I was completely stunned... The entrance was so spacious and grand, especially compared to the simple, rustic vibe of the surroundings. Anjay! My first thought was: Is this a "luxurious" tourist trap?
But after going inside, it was a pleasant surprise! It's a huge two-story space with both indoor and outdoor seating. The best part is the endless view of rice paddies right outside the window, with mountains in the distance. It's so Chill!. The service was also not what you'd expect on a small island. The guys working there were all super enthusiastic, had the sweetest smiles, and the food came out fast.
We tried a few dishes, and surprisingly, they were all on point—not the kind of pre-packaged stuff just to get by with tourists. Fried Rice (Fried Rice) had a great 'wok hei' (wok aroma) and was the kind of comfort food that instantly cures travel fatigue. Then there was the Sweet and Sour Snapper (Ikan Kakap Asam Manis); the sauce was perfectly balanced. Remember to ask them to add extra pineapple—it's amazing! The Salted Egg Yolk Squid (Cumi Cumi Telur Asin) that my companion ordered was also devoured in seconds; they said it was the best thing for lunch. To be able to eat food of this quality on an island in the middle of a lake is truly Mantap!
But, let's be real here. This place is definitely on the expensive side for the island, so your wallet will feel a little pinch. If you're in a large group (like for a company outing), you absolutely must book in advance! I saw a big group at the next table complaining that even though they had pre-ordered their food, they waited a long time and the portions weren't nearly enough. So, if you have a large group, be sure to confirm the portion sizes with the owner multiple times.

- Ordering Guide: For two people, feel free to order whatever you like; the experience is great. But for large groups of more than 10 people, you must! you must! communicate the portion sizes with the owner in advance to avoid any issues
