My TikTok has been flooded recently[1] with posts about Kampung Kecil[2], a place even President Jokowi took his family to eat at. With so much hype, I had to come and test the waters myself!
I originally thought it would be some kind of unattainable "presidential royal cuisine," but when I got the menu... Anjay! The prices are so affordable, right? The slogan is literally "A king's taste at a commoner's price" (Rasanya Ngeraja, harganya Ngerakyat)[3]. I give them full marks for that confidence!
The Vibe and Food, Is It Really Chill?
The moment I walked in, I was captivated by the "village" atmosphere. The individual thatched-roof huts, or Saung, are perfect for a group of friends to Nongkrong and eat together, offering amazing privacy. They really nailed the ambiance.
The dishes we ordered were all on point, and the portions were generous too. A few of us ordered a family set menu and we could barely finish it[4].
Highly Recommended:
- 烤肋排 (Grilled Ribs)[5]: My absolute favorite of the night! Grilled to be crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, with a super flavorful sauce. One bite and it's truly Mantap!
- 酸甜古拉米鱼 (Gurame Asam Manis): The fish was very fresh, and the sweet and sour flavor was very appetizing. But personally, I think it would have been perfect with a little more sauce[6].
However, There Are Some Downsides…
To be honest, the experience wasn't 100% perfect. The waiter was a bit clumsy; his hand slipped when serving a dish and he almost spilled it. Luckily, he reacted quickly and replaced it with a new one right away[7], so his attitude was still OK.
But the biggest flaw is the design of those thatched-roof Saung! The steps are built extremely high. Even as a young person, I found it a bit difficult to go up and down. You should really think twice if you're bringing elderly family members, it's not friendly for seniors at all[8]!
