Finding a proper breakfast spot in Solo isn't exactly an easy task[1]. Especially for a stomach like mine, spoiled by the savory and spicy flavors of Jakarta, I have a bit of PTSD from the generally sweet taste common in Central Java.
But when I turned onto Jl. Siwalan and saw this old Joglo house surrounded by greenery, my food radar went off: Yep, this is the one.
Breakfast in a Traditional Javanese Old House
The moment I walked in, the whole world seemed to cool down. The space is huge, a typical Javanese Joglo wooden structure[2] with very high ceilings and excellent air circulation. It was filled with local families having breakfast, giving it a lively, authentic vibe—not at all one of those influencer spots just for tourists. The atmosphere is very Chill.
Ordering is semi-self-service. First, you tell the auntie you want rice, and then you can get creative with a whole row of Lauk Pauk (side dishes)[3]. Tempe, tofu, various Sate, crackers... If you have trouble making decisions, you'll really struggle here.
The main event, of course, is the signature Pecel Madiun[4]! Honestly, this might be the Pecel in Solo that best suited my taste. The peanut sauce is the savory and rich kind, not cloyingly sweet at all. They're generous with the vegetables too. Paired with warm rice, one bite is just Mantap! Vegetarian friends, you can go for it without hesitation. Add a nice cold Dawet Ayu[5] to cleanse the palate, and this breakfast is complete. 👌
Let's Be Real: Beware of the Side Dish "Assassins"!
After all that praise, I have to say something honest. The price for their main dishes is really fair, but don't get carried away when picking the side dishes! I casually grabbed what looked like a very ordinary Ngohyang (five-spice meat roll), but when I paid, I saw it was 14k[6]—almost as much as a main dish, Anjay! And the taste was just mediocre, and it wasn't even that big[7]. I felt like I was precisely targeted by a "side dish assassin"...😂
My Tips to Avoid the Traps ✍️
- Go early: They open very early in the morning, making it the perfect place to experience the local breakfast culture. It gets crowded on weekends, but the place is big so you probably won't have to wait for a table. Great for Nongkrong.
- Go easy on the side dishes: It's best to ask for the price before you take them, especially those small, unassuming fried items. While most are reasonably priced, a few are definitely on the high side. Don't be a sucker like me.
- Can't-go-wrong combo: `Nasi Pecel` + `Dawet Ayu`. If you like spicy food, try their `Ayam Penyet`. I heard their Sambal is super flavorful[8]!
- Easy parking: Friends coming by car don't need to worry, there's a parking lot right out front[9].
- Breakfast in a cool Joglo wooden structure[1]. Packed with locals, it has a lively, Chill vibe that beats any tourist trap.
