Every time we have a team-building event in Indonesia, finding a place that can fit a dozen or so people, has a decent atmosphere, and isn't ridiculously expensive is enough to make you pull your hair out...🤯 Until this trip to Malang, a lokal friend brought me to this place, Ocean Garden, and it was a real eye-opener.
An Affordable Feast in a Javanese Garden
The moment I stepped in, Anjay! This isn't just a restaurant; it's practically a giant Javanese-style garden[1]! With its antique Javanese Joglo architecture, you can choose regular seating or the super atmospheric "Lesehan" style, sitting on the floor. The vibe is maxed out, perfect for a big group to come and Nongkrong, super chill～ Moms with kids, don't worry either. There's a playground right next to it to free up your hands.
Since there were a lot of us, we ordered a wide variety of dishes. Their signature Ayam Pontianak[2] was perfectly spicy and went great with rice! For my friends who love spicy food, go straight for their Bebek Gongso[3], a spicy stir-fried duck that's an absolute godsend for those who love bold flavors. But the best part of the whole meal had to be the unlimited refills at the sambal station! A full four types of Sambal[4] to eat as much as you want, paired with the also unlimited rice, I feel like I could eat three bowls of just the sauce and rice! 🍚🌶️

But, to be honest, while the overall taste was on point, it felt like the quality wasn't very consistent. One or two of the dishes we ordered were a bit under/overcooked[5], which was a little disappointing.
Also, if you order the set menu per person, the portion size might seem a bit... delicate. For example, some friends who came in a group of 20 and ordered the 50k IDR per person set menu complained that the portions were too small[6], and they had to rely on the unlimited rice to fill up the big eaters, haha. So that's something to keep in mind when ordering.

- Ordering hack: Their QR code ordering system can have a spotty signal sometimes[8]. Don't just sit there waiting; connecting directly to the restaurant's free Wi-Fi will make it much smoother.
- Parking guide: For those arriving by motorcycle 🛵, no worries, there's plenty of parking. But for tour buses, the road is a bit narrow and difficult to navigate[9], so it'll be tough for the drivers.
- How to score a deal: Secretly follow their IG! I saw that they give out free set meals on Mondays and Thursdays for fasting days[10]. You'd be a fool not to take advantage of a deal like that!
