Honestly, trying to find authentic Gudeg in Jakarta that isn't sickeningly sweet is so hard! Every time, it's either so sweet it's depressing, or it just feels like it's missing some"soul". That is, until I discovered this place in East Jakarta, Gudeg Bu Nah, and my Javanese stomach's DNA was completely awakened!
The Atmosphere Instantly Transports You, It's So Jogja!
Don't mind that it's a bit out of the way in East Jakarta, it's absolutely worth making a special trip for. The moment you walk in, the atmosphere just gets you. There's Batik hanging on the walls, ancient Javanese script that I couldn't understand but looked super cool, and even the waitresses are wearing traditional Kebaya[1]. The immersion is super strong, you're instantly transported to the streets of Yogyakarta. The feeling is so Mantap!
I ordered the signature Gudeg set. The jackfruit is stewed until it's soft, tender, and full of flavor. Most importantly, the balance between sweet and savory is just right—it's not that one-note, cloying sweetness at all, and you can taste the complex layers of spices. The accompanying Krecek (beef skin)[2] has a bit of a spicy kick, which is super perfect with rice! My friend's Ayam Kremes[3] was so fragrant, it was Anjay. The chicken was so tender it fell off the bone with a light touch, and the seasoning was mind-blowing!
What surprised me the most was their Jamu, the traditional herbal drink[4], which is really rare to find in Jakarta! I had a glass of Kunyit Asem (turmeric and tamarind), and it was sweet, sour, and refreshing. It instantly cut through the richness of the food, and I felt like I could go for another three bowls!

Even though the food is amazing, I have to point out the downsides. Friends who want to drive here, please think twice. The parking is pitifully scarce—it can probably only fit two or three cars[5], and looking for a parking spot will make you lose your mind on the spot. Also! It gets insanely crowded during lunchtime, kind of like a cafeteria during rush hour back in China, so trying to just Chill quietly is basically impossible[6].
