Every time I pass by By The Sea in PIK, I always see a long queue at the entrance of this Milky Way Cafe, and its Google rating is as high as 4.8, which sends some seriously mixed signals. Since I happened to be free today, I decided to be the guinea pig myself to see if it's a divine dessert or just another overhyped internet-famous rip-off. 🤔
Walking in, I have to say, they really know how to create an atmosphere. The dim lighting paired with the woody decor really has a magical vibe that makes you want to sit down and Nongkrong all afternoon[1]. The AC is blasting, and compared to the scorching weather outside that could melt you, this place is simply heaven. The whole space is very cozy, perfect for gossiping with your besties or for a couple's date.

I came for their signature dish and ordered a Thai Milk Tea Kakigori[2]. When it arrived, the presentation was quite photogenic. The ice was shaved super fine, melting in my mouth, and it wasn't one of those fakes that only has syrup on the surface. It had a rich tea flavor from the inside out[3], and I have to give them props for that, Mantap! The milk tea sauce on the side can be added by yourself, so you can control the sweetness, which is pretty good.
BUT! Friends, here comes the plot twist. The service is really like opening a blind box. You wait forever to order, and then wait forever for the food to arrive. Impatient people will literally explode on the spot[4]. And the price... one shaved ice costs 80-90k rupiah[5], but the size they serve you, Anjay! It's seriously mini, felt like it was gone in two or three bites. As for the value for money, I can only say, emmm... you know what I mean. 🤷♀️
