Friends, who gets it! Drawn by its high 4.9 Google rating, I excitedly rushed to this popular internet-famous seafood spot in Lampung, WaHaHa Seafood, only to be nearly driven mad by the service. The food was genuinely good, but the overall experience was so polarizing. I have to spill the tea with you all today. 🤷♀️
Right at the entrance, two welcoming turtles named "Wawa" and "Haha" were quite cute, and there was also a kids' playground, making it seem like a great spot for family gatherings. The whole restaurant is huge, with a semi-open design that's quite comfortable to sit in. The creatures in the seafood tanks were lively and jumping, their freshness visible to the naked eye, which maxed out my expectations! ✨
We ordered a few signature dishes, and the taste was truly Mantap!
Signature Smoked Crab (Kepiting Asap)[1] was definitely the star of the show! 🔥 The smoky and spicy flavors were perfectly balanced, so spicy it made me sweat but I just couldn't stop eating. The crab meat was plump, fresh, and sweet, Anjay! But for those who can't handle spice, please steer clear; this level of heat is no joke.
Grouper (Kerapu)[2] was also amazing. We chose the Hong Kong-style steam, and the fish was so tender it melted in your mouth. Even the sauce was so savory I wanted to mix it with rice.
There was also a Kung Pao Chicken[3] that was a pleasant surprise. It had pineapple in it, giving it a sweet and sour taste. It wasn't a half-hearted attempt at Chinese food at all, a great change of pace if you get tired of seafood.
But! Here comes the plot twist…
Now that I'm done with the praise, it's time to complain. The biggest weakness of this place is the service, which is simply disastrous. The waiters seemed to have an invisibility skill, appearing and disappearing unpredictably the whole time. Calling for them for ages and getting no response was the standard procedure[4]. We made a reservation in advance, but still had to wait for a long time after arriving. And, for a seafood restaurant, how could the most popular crabs and squid be sold out?![5] Excuse me?
The prices aren't cheap either. For the three of us, a casual meal cost around 900,000 Indonesian Rupiah[6]. For this price, combined with such service, the value for money is really not high. I can only say the food saved the day, otherwise I might have lost my temper on the spot. 🙄
