Honestly, after so many years in Bali, I've seen my fair share of temples and restaurants, big and small, in Ubud, but Taman Dedari truly blew me away. It's not that kind of fresh, delicate beauty, but an overwhelming, mythical, epic kind of awe!
The Vibe is Absolutely Mantap! 👍
As soon as you step into that valley, you'll immediately understand why it's called 'Angel Garden'. Giant angel statues, dozens of meters tall, are scattered throughout the tropical rainforest, overlooking the entire river valley, creating a truly spectacular scene. These statues are inspired by the Balinese mythical nymphs 'Dedari'[1], each one carved lifelike and in different poses. I dare say, this is definitely one of the best places in Ubud for photos; any random corner looks like a movie set.
We made sure to arrive before sunset, watching the sunset light pierce through the trees, casting a golden glow on the massive stone statues. That sacred yet serene feeling is truly hard to describe in words. Just for this view, I think the trip was totally worth it.
As for the Food... it's a Bit Anjay 😅
The ambiance gets full marks, but when it comes to food, friends, we need to be objective. The reviews are really polarized.
To be on the safe side, we ordered a few signature dishes. Crispy Duck[2] tasted pretty good; the skin was crispy, and the meat was tender. The Indonesian salad Gado Gado[3] was also quite authentic, with a generous amount of peanut sauce.
But! The downsides were equally obvious. My friend who was with me ordered Rendang and was very disappointed, saying it tasted bland. Even more ridiculous, one soup dish was served lukewarm[4], which really dampened the experience. And since it's an open-air outdoor environment, there were always a few flies 'nongkrong' nearby while we ate, which was a bit annoying[5].
My Honest Guide, Take It or Leave It!
Finally, for those darlings who want to go, here are a few key points:
- Just taking photos, not eating? Absolutely! Pay a 50,000 IDR entrance fee[6] and you can get in. If you decide to eat inside, the entrance fee is waived. Honestly, main courses are priced between 50,000-75,000 IDR, which isn't expensive, and ordering a drink to sit and enjoy the view is also very chill.
- Best Time: Make sure to arrive about an hour before sunset[7], so you'll have enough time to walk around and take photos in the park, then find a good spot to enjoy the stunning sunset.
- Mosquito repellent! Mosquito repellent! Mosquito repellent! This is important, so I'll say it three times. Mosquitoes start coming out at dusk, so if you don't want to be bitten into a 'red bean ice', definitely remember to bring mosquito spray[8]!
- Note the Time: Google says it closes at 11 PM, but actually the kitchen closes at 10 PM[9], so don't go too late and find it empty.
- Towering giant angel statues [1] dot the rainforest, overlooking the valley. This overwhelming mythical epic vibe is unique to Ubud!
