Just came over from Singapore by boat and was looking for a place to Chill in Batam. I scrolled and found this place, ARCH ALLEY. The retro red-brick warehouse style in the pictures totally got me, so I rushed over without a second thought!
Stepping inside, honestly, I was blown away. It felt like I was instantly transported from Batam to a wine cellar in some old European city. The dim yellow lighting, exquisite European decor, the faint aroma of wine and food in the air, and the live band's singing was a huge plus[1]. The atmosphere was top-notch, and the photos turned out amazing. Just for the ambiance alone, I felt the trip was worth it. 👌
The Food: Half Heaven, Half... Kitchen Disaster?
After sitting down to order, we had done our homework and went straight for the recommended dishes.
First, the good stuff:
My friend's Grilled Octopus[2] definitely deserves a Mantap! It was cooked to perfection, super tender, and even when it cooled down, it was still soft to chew, not tough at all.
My Cheese Truffle Pizza[3] was also quite good. The crust was fragrant and crispy, and the aromas of cheese and truffle blended perfectly. It was one of the best dishes of the night.
I heard their Steak[4] is a signature dish. Seeing the table next to us order it, it did look very tempting. A lot of people come here specifically for the steak.
And then, the disaster struck...
The Handmade Pasta[5] another friend ordered was a complete disaster. 🍝 First, they brought out a plate that was incredibly salty. We politely asked the waiter to replace it. But when the second one came, it actually tasted bitter and burnt... Anjay! Their official Instagram is clearly still promoting the handmade pasta, but the quality control is so Schrödinger's cat, isn't it?
Rant Time: Good Looks Can't Save the Chaotic Service
Honestly, the biggest problem with this place isn't the food, it's the management.
The service was just so, so, so chaotic[6]! Waiters were flying all over the place but somehow couldn't see you raising your hand. You had to call out for ages before someone would come over. The order of serving was also completely random. We finished our main courses, and the appetizer was still nowhere to be seen. 🤷♀️
The prices aren't cheap either. For the two of us just eating casually, the bill came to 1 million Indonesian Rupiah[7]. The key thing is, the experience didn't match the price. Oh, and a bottle of Fuji mineral water costs 10 US dollars[8]. I'm speechless...
Another thing, they allow vaping indoors[9]. The table next to us was puffing away, which is an immediate -100 points to the experience for non-smokers.
