For real, if it weren't for Google Maps leading us through all the twists and turns deep into this residential area, I really would have thought the driver was lost. This place is way too 'hidden in plain sight'! The entrance looks just like an ordinary, unremarkable house, but during mealtimes, the delivery guys' motorcycles were coming and going non-stop, which instantly piqued my interest.
The 'Spiciness Challenge' in the Charcoal Aroma
The vibe is pure Lokal warung style, a semi-open canopy set up right at the front of the house, a few tables and chairs, full of life and a smoky atmosphere. Don't expect any fancy decor; the people who come here are all here for the food.
I ordered their most popular dish, Nasi Bakar Baby Cumi[1] (baby squid grilled rice). Tearing open the warm banana leaf, the charred aroma, a mix of spices and charcoal, hit me right in the nose—so Mantap! The rice had soaked up all the sauce, the squid was springy and tender, and the flavor was rich and went perfectly with the rice.
Here comes the main point: their spice levels! You can choose from Level 0 to 5. As someone who considers myself pretty good with spicy food, I played it safe and ordered Level 1, but ended up gasping and panting 🥵... The spiciness hits you straight on with a strong after-kick, but it's so fragrant you just can't stop eating. If you dare to challenge Level 5, I salute you, you're a true warrior![2]
The most Anjay part was, how could the Dimsum[3] from a grilled rice place be so delicious?! The siu mai and beancurd skin rolls were just as good as those from a dedicated dim sum restaurant. It was a pleasant surprise.

While the taste is undeniably great, there are a few things to complain about. First, the location is really hard to find, and if you come by car, parking spots are extremely limited—riding a motorcycle is the way to go[4]. Second, the portion size... well, it's just right for a girl to finish, not the kind of huge Padang rice portion that stuffs you. Big eaters might need to order extra rice[5]. Oh, right, when I was paying, the guy seemed to have miscalculated the bill and overcharged a bit, so it's best for everyone to double-check their bill when paying.
