But once I sat down, I discovered a whole new world. Although it was noisy, the atmosphere was super lovely, with the open kitchen[1] right in the middle of the restaurant. You order the dishes yourself at the counter. With so many options, it was dazzling, so I just let my friend order a few signature dishes:
🥥 Ayam Degan (Coconut Chicken): The absolute best! Anjay! The chicken was actually served in a whole coconut shell[3], talk about presentation! They use free-range chicken, but it's stewed until super tender. The broth combines the sweet freshness of coconut with the sour and spicy kick of spices, incredibly appetizing. I could finish a whole portion, soup and all!
🐟 Gurame Bakar (Grilled Gurame Fish): The grilled fish was also quite Mantap[4]. The fish was fresh, with a crispy, fragrant skin, and the meat inside was still very juicy. Dipped in their unique Sambal, it was absolutely divine.
🌶️ Karedok & Sambal (Vegetable Salad and Chili Sauce): My friend's highly recommended Karedok[5] was indeed a champion dish. Fresh vegetables paired with rich and silky peanut sauce, the texture was incredibly rich. But the real soul was that plate of Sambal Mitoha[6]. The spiciness was off the charts, fragrant and addictive. I kept adding it to my rice, gasping for air, it was so captivating!
Let's Get Real (The Truth)
To be honest, this place isn't perfect. First, it's really popular. During meal times, the queue can make you question your life choices[7]. Second, their default spice level isn't very tourist-friendly. That Karedok was so spicy that even I, an Indonesian veteran, felt a bit overwhelmed. If you can't handle spice well, you definitely need to be careful.
Also, some side dishes aren't very big. For example, the lalapan (raw vegetable platter) was a bit mini[8]. However, they give you plenty of rice, so it balances out.
