Jujur (to be honest), every time I pass by this Little Bahari in Muara Karang, Jakarta, and see the crowd packed like a can of sardines at the entrance, I always wonder: Is it really worth it? 🤔
This time, I tried it myself, and now I get it. It's half fire, half seawater—making you both love and hate it.
The ordering process is also very anjay; you have to order first at the entrance, facing a row of tanks filled with live seafood, before you can be led inside to find a seat[1]. It feels like you're fighting for goods at a wet market, the sense of ceremony is maxed out (in a reverse way). The place has AC, but the space is tiny, with tables packed next to each other. If you're looking to quietly chill, just forget it. This place is only suitable for a lively nongkrong.
When it comes to flavor, ambiance and service are just passing clouds
After sitting down, the chaotic feeling was instantly cured by the delicious food. Of the few dishes we ordered, almost none were a miss.
Nyonya Steamed Fish (Ikan Tim Nyonya)[2]: Best of the night! The sour and spicy, appetizing broth seeps into the super fresh and tender grouper meat. I could eat three bowls of rice with it! The taste is truly Mantap!
Padang Sauce Seafood (Seafood Saus Padang)[3]: Order this with your eyes closed! The sauce is so thick it clings to every shrimp and piece of crab. The spicy fragrance is intoxicating, and it's so good you'll be licking your fingers. This is the soul of Indonesian cuisine!
Boiled Shrimp (Udang Rebus)[4]: The simplest cooking method is the biggest test of the ingredients. The shrimp here is so fresh that it's purely sweet in your mouth, and the meat is firm and bouncy. Love it, love it.
But, here come the complaints I just have to get off my chest
Although it's delicious, the bugs (flaws) of this place are also visible to the naked eye.
First, the service… I don't know if I was just unlucky, but the girl at the cashier had a sour face like someone owed her 2.4 juta[5]… I had to ask for a spoon three times, the waiters were passing the buck to each other, and the boss was loudly scolding the staff… The experience was really a bit chaotic[6].
Secondly, a friend mentioned feeling unwell after eating, suspecting that the shellfish wasn't fully cooked[7]. Those of you with sensitive stomachs should be careful.
