Drawn by its title as one of"Asia's 50 Best"[1], I finally came to check out PANTJA. After all, in a fiercely competitive area like Senopati in Jakarta, making it onto the list means you must be something special. But to be honest, my experience left me with mixed feelings. It's a love-hate situation, I guess…🤔
Great Vibe, but Lacking in Details
The American retro decor right as you walk in really appealed to me. The dim lighting maxed out the ambiance, making it perfect for a date or to come and chill with friends at night. The restaurant has two floors: the first floor is the non-smoking area and is relatively quiet; the second floor is the smoking area with a DJ, which is more lively and suitable for just drinks and to Nongkrong[2].
However, the downsides were also obvious. The AC wasn't really strong enough, and I got a bit hot halfway through the meal 🥵. Also, the smell of cooking fumes from the kitchen would occasionally drift over, which isn't great for people sensitive to smells.
Drinks are truly Mantap, but the Food is a Blind Box
The drink menu is truly impeccable, living up to its reputation as an award-winning bar. The cocktails are high-quality and full of complex flavors[3]; you can't go wrong even if you order with your eyes closed. I feel like it's totally worth it to come here just for drinks, even without having a meal.
But the food… is really a matter of luck. Some dishes are so delicious it's Anjay, while others just leave you making a face.
👍 Highly Recommend: Korean Short Rib[4]! The short rib is grilled to be crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, with a caramelized aroma, and the juices are locked in perfectly. This dish was definitely the best of the night!
🤔 The Signature Conundrum: The signature Pantja Fried Chicken (PFC)[5] gets very mixed reviews. I thought it was okay, quite crispy, but in terms of being amazing or value for money, it's a bit emmm… you know what I mean.

The staff was a bit"belagu" (which means arrogant in Indonesian), slow to respond, and I feel like it didn't justify the service charge[7] for this price range.

- Seating Guide: If you want a quiet meal, choose the non-smoking area on the first floor. If you want to drink, chat, and soak in the lively atmosphere, go to the second floor, but you'll have to accept the fact that it might be a smoking area.
