I ordered Se'i Sapi (Smoked Beef)[1] and the Se'i Lidah (Smoked Beef Tongue)[2], which countless people have raved about. As soon as the meat arrived, all the frustration I had earlier vanished. Mantap! The smoky aroma was incredibly dominant, and the slices of meat were glistening with oil. The beef was tender, not dry, but what truly amazed me was the beef tongue! It was so soft it practically melted in my mouth, taking the texture to another level compared to the beef. Absolutely incredible.
The soul of the dish has to be the dipping sauce! You absolutely must choose Sambal Lu'at[3]. It's sour and spicy, with the freshness of lime and spices, perfectly balancing the richness of the smoked meat. A bite of meat, a bite of rice, paired with the sambal, I was instantly in heaven. Then another sip of their canned iced Lemongrass Tea[4]. It cuts through the richness and cools you down. Whoever invented this combination really knows their stuff!
But to be fair, this place is indeed a bit overhyped. If you're expecting mind-blowing, god-tier deliciousness, you might find it a bit overrated.
