I heard there's a legendary spot in Banjar Baru where the Sambal is unlimited! As someone who can eat three bowls of rice just with Sambal, I rushed right over. But… is a free lunch really that good? 🤔
Diving Right In!
The storefront is a very Lokal warung, the decor is nothing to speak of, but it's reasonably clean. It gets super crowded at lunchtime, with locals coming with their whole families. The fans were blowing at full blast but it was still a bit hot[1], but I loved this lively hustle and bustle!
Here comes the main event! Several types of Sambal Dadakan[2] were lined up on the table, and they looked so Anjay! I tried the recommended sambal korek and sambal limau kulit[3]. The former had a good spicy kick, while the latter had the fresh fragrance of lime peel, perfect with fried food! Mantap! The taste was good, but to be honest, it didn't feel as 'freshly made' as advertised, so it lost a few points for freshness. Also, for a heavy-duty spicy food addict, the heat level was just an appetizer.
For the main course, I ordered the signature fried chicken (Ayam Goreng) and fried tilapia (Ikan Nila Goreng). That fish was fried really well[4], the skin was so crispy it made a crunching sound, and the fish inside was still tender. The seasoning was also just right, full marks! But! The star of the show, the fried chicken, was a bit of a letdown… It looked golden and tempting on the outside, but when I bit into it, it was actually a bit raw inside[5]…😅 Seriously, that's a real no-go!
Some Honest Thoughts…
Although the free-flow Sambal is awesome, the value for money at this place is really up for debate. One portion of fried chicken without rice costs 30,000 Indonesian Rupiah[6], so a casual meal for two easily costs almost 100k, which isn't cheap for a warung. And the portion of side vegetables (Lalapan) was way too small[7]! Just a few slices of cucumber and basil, so stingy, and not enough to go with the rice!
