Tired of Jakarta's concrete jungle, I drove out to Tangerang for the weekend. I wasn't expecting much, but when we got to the edge of Lake Cipondoh, I was instantly stunned the moment I saw Jagarawa.
A vast, open lake view, with Sundanese-style thatched huts (Saung) scattered along the water's edge. This isn't just a restaurant, it's practically a mini-resort! The air was filled with the vibe of 'nongkrong' and 'chill', and my mood instantly lifted. We chose a thatched hut right by the lake, and the view was absolutely incredible. Any photo you take looks like a masterpiece[1].
Perfect Scenery, But How's the Food?
No matter how good the scenery is, it's all for nothing if the food is bad. We came for their signature dishes, so we had to give them a try.
Their signature grilled fish (Ikan Gurame)[2] really lived up to the hype. The skin was grilled to a crispy fragrance, while the meat was fresh and tender. Dip it in the sauce, Mantap! For an appetizer, we ordered the Tahu Granat[3], which was also a pleasant surprise. The portions were quite generous; I feel like one dish is enough for 2-3 people to share, so considering that, the value for money is decent[4].

But what really put me off was the so-called 'mini zoo.' The little monkeys and parrots in the cages looked to be in poor condition, and the turtle pond was incredibly dirty. It was truly heartbreaking to see[6]. They probably did this to attract families with kids, but if they can't keep up with animal welfare, they really shouldn't have bothered at all. This part gets a definite bad review!
I also have to complain about the service. During peak hours when it gets crowded, the staff collectively 'disappear.' Asking for a high chair or some extra soy sauce required asking three or four times. It was just so exhausting[7].

- Best time to go: I recommend coming in the evening so you can watch the sunset. But after dark, the lighting is a bit dim, which can affect the experience. Girls who are afraid of the dark, be warned[9].
- Must-haves: It's by a lake, so mosquitoes and flies are unavoidable. You must! MUST! bring mosquito repellent! Don't ask me how I know[10].
- Ordering guide: When ordering, just go for the grilled fish (Ikan Gurame); you basically can't go wrong with it. As for the other dishes, just leave it to fate and don't have high expectations.
