Friends, I'm speechless! To eat the legendary Nasi Uduk Bu Amah, I almost got lost in the small alleys of West Jakarta. My GPS gave up on me at the entrance of the alley, my car couldn't get in at all[1], so I had to go on foot. The alley was so narrow... I felt like if me and the motorcycle bro were even a little bit chubbier, we'd get stuck.
After finally finding my way to the shop, it was just a super inconspicuous little window, with not even a place to dine in. But the moment that aroma of coconut rice wafted out, I instantly felt the whole hassle was worth it!
Their Nasi Uduk[2] rice is truly Mantap, the coconut milk flavor is super rich, with a savory base, and it's topped with a generous amount of fried shallots, maxing out the textural layers. The portion size is also quite generous, even for a big guy like me, I was very satisfied[3].
The main event is the Ayam Goreng[4], which uses Ayam Kampung (free-range chicken), so the meat is a bit chewier. Some friends might find it a bit tough, but I personally quite like this kind of texture. - Time it right! The opening hours are super short. They open around 4 PM and basically close up shop before 6 PM[8]. They're also closed on Sundays, so don't make a wasted trip.
- How to get there! Promise me, don't drive. The smartest choice is to ride a motorcycle or take a Go-Jek to the entrance of the alley and then walk in.
- Takeaway only! They only do takeaway here, there's no place for you to Nongkrong. Get it to go and eat it at home or in your car, haha.
