Step back in time at Ikan Bakar Cianjur, a grilled fish restaurant set in a magnificent Dutch colonial building in Semarang's Old Town. This spot is famous for its perfectly grilled Gurame Bakar and fragrant Nasi Liwet, served quickly in a photogenic, vintage atmosphere. While the food and ambiance are major draws, the presence of indoor smoking makes it less ideal for families with children. It's a must-visit for the food, but be mindful of the environment.
Every time I come to Semarang's Old Town (Kota Lama), I'm always drawn to this magnificent old Dutch colonial building. I've passed by it countless times and always thought it was some museum or government office, but I never expected it to be a restaurant! And it's the "national-level" Indonesian grilled fish chain, Ikan Bakar Cianjur (IBC). The contrast is just off the charts.
However, to be fair, I have to mention the downsides. The price is on the mid-to-high side for Semarang, around 60k-75k IDR per person. Although the taste is worth the price, my wallet still felt a little pinch.
Overall, if you're coming for the food and the vintage atmosphere, this place definitely won't disappoint you. But if you're having a family meal and have high standards for the environment, then you might want to weigh your options carefully. Have you been? Come Nongkrong in the comments section

This spacious spot offers a cool, "cyberpunk" vibe perfect for chilling with a large group of friends, complete with live music on weekends. Get the full scoop on the hits and misses of this unconventional hangout spot before you visit.

Discover a popular Semarang spot where the food is truly divine, but the atmosphere is anything but quiet. While the live band can be overwhelmingly loud, the "god-tier" 48-hour dry-aged steak and melt-in-your-mouth roasted duck might just make it worthwhile. The vibe is chic and modern, but be ready for premium prices and refined portions. This is a fantastic choice for foodies who don't mind a boisterous dining experience and are ready to splurge on incredible dishes.

For just 10k, you get a bowl of chewy noodles coated in a complex, aromatic red chili sauce that’s a world away from typical mie ayam. This place is all about the flavor, not the frills. For the best experience, eat the noodles dry-mixed and prepare for a delicious, mind-blowing heat.

Craving affordable Indonesian food in Semarang? Waroeng Kaligarong offers a fantastic deal with meals under 50k and free rice refills. The must-try is their crispy Bebek Sambal Mangga, perfectly balanced with a refreshing mango sauce. While the spot is spacious and family-friendly, here's the catch: the service can be extremely slow. This restaurant is perfect if you have plenty of time and patience, but maybe skip it if you're in a hurry.
