Seriously, when the car reached the mountaintop and I saw the completely unobstructed view of Semarang's city lights from the second-floor outdoor seating at Eden Resto, my inner monologue was just: Mantap! This is so perfect for a date![1] The twinkling lights spread out below my feet, the evening breeze was blowing, and any random photo you take is a photo of a lifetime. The atmosphere was maxed out, and there was live music inside, making it perfect for couples on a date or for friends to just nongkrong.
After sitting down to order, I saw the menu had quite a lot of options, including both Western and Indonesian food. The prices were surprisingly affordable, with most dishes priced between 20k-60k IDR[2], so the value for money seemed great. I ordered their signature Italian Beef Stew[3], and I have to give it props! The beef was stewed until it was super tender, falling apart at the touch of a fork, and the mashed potatoes it came with were creamy and delicious. My friend ordered a Pizza[4], and said it was a no-brainer choice, and it was indeed really good. The Gelato[5] we had to finish off the meal was also delicious; I almost finished it before remembering to take a picture 😋.
BUT! Here it comes, the plot twist. The good mood brought on by the view and some of the dishes was almost completely ruined by the service. Anjay! The waiters were gathered nearby, chatting and laughing so earth-shatteringly loud, louder than the conversation at my own table. We had to chase our order several times with no response. Plus, the order in which the food was served was a total mess. My friend's soup and main course arrived at the same time, so by the time they finished the soup, the main was already cold.[6] The flavors were also like opening a blind box; the good dishes were really good, but the bad ones were truly terrible. For example, the spaghetti bolognese tasted a lot like sauce from a can you'd buy at the supermarket[7], you know what I mean?
