Went to BSD over the weekend, and I was originally just looking for a random place to Nongkrong, but ended up passing by this place, Sushi Matsuki. Holy cow, the line at the door was almost as long as for a concert! 🧐 It looked like a totally ordinary Ruko (shophouse), so what magic makes people willing to bake in the sun waiting outside? Curiosity got the better of me, so I got a number and joined the waiting crowd.
The Sashimi is Heaven, The Ambiance is... Earthly
After waiting for almost an hour, I finally got in. To be honest, the ambiance is really... down-to-earth. The shop is small and a bit cramped, the wallpaper is peeling, and I literally saw a fly buzzing around[1], so germaphobes might need to take a deep breath. Although the second floor has Japanese-style tatami seating, the AC isn't very strong, making it quite stuffy and hot.
But! The moment the food arrived, I instantly forgave everything about the environment!
🍣 三文鱼腩 (Salmon Belly)[2]: Oh my god! The cuts are touchingly thick; one slice is like two from a chain restaurant. It's fatty, melts in your mouth, and so fresh it's like it was just pulled from the sea. The texture is just Mantap!
🍣 鳗鱼寿司 (Unagi Nigiri)[3]: Also killer-level stuff. The sauce has the perfect amount of sweetness, the fish is soft and tender without falling apart, and one bite fills you with pure bliss.
🍣 火山卷 (Volcano Roll)[4]: So loaded with ingredients you have to use your hands to catch the fallout. The flavor is rich, but a friendly reminder: it's super hot when it first comes out, so be careful not to burn your mouth!
Overall, the quality of their sashimi is way beyond any chain sushi place in the same price range[5], and the portions are also very generous.

While the food is amazing, I have to mention the downsides. The service is really a matter of luck. The server I got that day had a poker face the whole time and didn't respond even after I called for them for ages[6], making it hard to even chill. The two of us ordered six or seven dishes and spent around 300,000 IDR, so the value for money is really high. But we did hit a landmine—definitely don't order the beef tongue. My friend said it was as tough as chewing on rubber[7].
