Whenever my girls ask me what's fun to do in Kalimantan, I'm always a bit at a loss for words. Besides getting fresh air and seeing orangutans, there really wasn't much to recommend... until I made a special trip to Samarinda just for this place.
This place is practically a legend locally, having grown from a small, humble street-side stall into a landmark that almost everyone knows[1]. Even before mealtime, the entrance is already bustling with cars and people, and the lively atmosphere is off the charts. To be honest, the environment is like an upgraded version of a very lokal food stall, so don't have high expectations. The people who come here are all here for that one-of-a-kind crab.
The Crab Hits the Table, and the Room Falls Silent
Here comes the main event! When the waiter brought over a bulging foil packet, my friends were stunned. Anjay! What a sense of ceremony! The moment it was opened, the rich aroma of spices and coconut milk exploded, and my mouth started watering uncontrollably.
This is the legendary signature Smoked Crab (Kepiting Asap)[2]. Honestly, the flavor completely changed my perception of seafood. The sauce is so thick and rich, it's less like seafood and more like eating a crab version of Rendang! The layers of spices are incredibly complex, with the sweet richness of coconut milk. The crab meat is plump and firm, and the amount of crab roe is almost illegal—every bite is incredibly satisfying. I could eat three bowls of rice with this sauce! Mantap!
Besides the crab, we also ordered a Fu Yung Hai (Puyunghai)[3], which was also very interesting. Unlike the fluffy versions elsewhere, their Fu Yung Hai is dense and compact, with a very unique texture. It's worth a try.
Let's Be Real, Prepare Your Wallet and Your Patience
OK, enough with the praise, let's get real. There is a price to pay for this crab.
First, the price. It's definitely on the "pricey" side for Samarinda. The two of us just ordered a few dishes, and the bill came to almost 1 million Indonesian Rupiah, which definitely hurt the wallet a bit. But to be fair, considering the size and quality of the crabs, I think it was worth the price.
Second, the crowd! It gets insanely crowded during meal times, and the environment can be quite noisy. The first-floor dining area can be a bit hot, so for my girls who can't stand the heat, remember to go straight to the second floor[4]. It feels much more comfortable.
