As soon as I got to Medan, a friend dragged me to this legendary Batak spot, RM. Dainang Medan. Honestly, I was a bit stunned at first glance... No AC, just big fans blowing hard, packed with people, and the smell of smoke mixed with grilled meat. The vibe was so lokal, right? I was wondering to myself, is this 4.8 Google rating fake? 🤔
The Grilled Pork Arrived, and I Shut Up
But as soon as the meat arrived at the table, I knew I was wrong, so incredibly wrong!
That signature Babi Panggang[1] (grilled pork), Anjay! The pork skin was roasted until it was super crispy, you could hear a clear crunch when you bit into it, and the meat underneath was full of a rich smoky flavor and so incredibly tender. Dipped in the special sauce, it was so delicious I wanted to stand up and dance! We also ordered the Ikan Nila Tombur[2], a spiced fish. The spice flavor was super on point, and the fish was fresh and tender, not fishy at all. And the classic Daun Ubi Tumbuk (cassava leaves), it was absolutely Mantap mixed with rice!
Most importantly, the value for money is really high! The two of us ordered a whole table of food, left completely stuffed, and the bill was only a little over 170k[3]. Plus, you can actually get free rice refills, and after you finish, they give you a complimentary glass of refreshing cucumber-pineapple juice[4]. That definitely gets a thumbs-up!
Hold On, Don't Rush Over Yet—Here Are the Downsides
Alright, enough praise, time for some real talk. The service at this place... honestly, it's hard to describe. We waited almost 40 minutes for our food to arrive, and watched as several tables that came after us got their food first. We had to remind them several times, and the staff seemed so busy their souls had left their bodies. Some reviews even say they play favorites with customers[5], which is a huge minus point!
