Calling all Matcha Heads! This shop cured my “Fake Matcha PTSD”

Honestly, finding a legit cup of matcha in Jakarta is harder than finding a partner. 🫠

It's either sickeningly sweet sugar water or bland, watery green tea powder. So when a friend told me to go find a matcha shop in Cengkareng, I almost rolled my eyes into the back of my head—what else could possibly be in that area besides the airport?

Turns out... I ate my words. 😂

A"Little Tokyo" Hidden in a Residential Area

This shop, called The Tokyo Matcha, is located in a row of ruko (shophouses) in Taman Palem Lestari, with a storefront so small you could easily miss it while driving by. But the moment I pushed the door open, I knew I had come to the right place.

There are no flashy, Instagram-famous walls, just simple wood and white walls. The air is filled with that unique aroma of high-quality matcha, reminiscent of seaweed and nuts, not a cheap, artificial fragrance. The owner (or staff) is behind the counter, whisking matcha with a chasen (bamboo whisk) stroke by stroke, and with that level of focus, you can tell they know what they're doing.

I ordered the most classic Matcha Latte. The milk foam was incredibly dense and smooth, and the first sip has that slightly bitter but extremely rich and mellow umami flavor, definitely not something you can get from artificial sweeteners! After swallowing, there's a lingering, light sweetness in your mouth. Two words: Mantap! 👍

Let's Talk Downsides Before You Decide to Go

To be fair, there are some downsides.

First, the location is *really* out of the way. If you don't live in West Jakarta, making a special trip really requires some 'powered by love' courage. Second, the shop isn't very big, with only a few seats. Trying to Nongkrong here with a big group of friends for an afternoon is probably not realistic. When it gets crowded on weekends, the experience might be compromised.

• If it's your first time: I recommend starting with the Matcha Latte or Houjicha Latte to get a feel for their fundamentals. Seasoned fans can directly challenge themselves with the hand-whisked single-origin matcha to better appreciate its original flavor.
• For photos: Don't bother trying too hard to pose; the essence of this place is the product itself. Just take a picture of that glowing green matcha in your hand, or the light and shadow at the counter, and you'll get that perfect Japanese vibe. 📸
