Seeing the massive crowd queuing outside and its 4.8-star rating from 5900+ reviews on Google, I thought, I have to go in and Nongkrong for a bit, right? The prices are ridiculously cheap, a paradise for students! But the result... Anjay, this meal left me with such mixed feelings.
The Experience: Half Fire, Half Ice
I mean, the greater the expectation, the greater the disappointment. I ordered their signature savory and spicy Mie Hompimpa[1] and specifically chose the entry-level spiciness, level 1. The first bite nearly sent me to the afterlife; the heat shot straight to my head! 🌶️ But my friend's bowl, also a level 1, was surprisingly bland and sickeningly sweet, felt more like a level 0. Is the quality control really this random[2]?
We also ordered the officially recommended Udang Keju (cheese shrimp dumplings) and Udang Rambutan (rambutan shrimp balls)[3]. They looked cute, but they were served cold... The wonton skins even had slightly burnt, dark edges. That's an immediate -50 points for the experience.
The environment was next-level bad. When I sat down, the table was still piled with leftovers from the previous customers. It took ages of calling before someone slowly came to clean it up[4]. The whole space was stuffy and hot, the fans were weak, and it felt like being in a sauna[5]. The seating was also extremely cramped; if more than 4 people came together, it would probably be difficult to even turn around.
