I originally wanted to come to the mountains of Semarang to Nongkrong for a bit and escape the hustle and bustle of the city. The air at the foot of Mount Ungaran is indeed cool, and when you open the curtains, you get a view of Rawa Pening lake, so beautiful I wanted to post it on my social media to show off[1]. I thought this was the perfect way to start the weekend, but then… Anjay! In the middle of the night, I was woken up by the ridiculously loud karaoke from a company team-building event next door, questioning my life choices. Then at 6 AM, I was woken up again by the super loud speakers for the plaza dancing[2]. Is this a vacation or a military boot camp? 😂
The pros are outstanding, but the cons are also a killer
To be fair, the facilities here are pretty solid. The entire hotel complex is so huge that you need to call a free shuttle bus[3] just to get between the lobby and your room. The design heavily features Javanese culture, with statues from the Ramayana story everywhere[4]. It's super photogenic no matter where you point your camera, and the atmosphere is on point.
There are so many facilities you can't get through them all in one day—a swimming pool, gardens, a small farm. You definitely won't run out of things to do if you're with kids or on a company team-building trip. But the biggest surprise of this trip was definitely the fried noodle cart I stumbled upon by the pool at night! The chef cooks it right there on the spot, and a steaming plate of Mie Jawa[5] is served up. It has that amazing 'wok hei' flavor, and the taste is simply Mantap! This is the true soul of Indonesian food!
Some hard truths I have to get off my chest
But, aside from that god-tier fried noodle, the rest of the food was... hard to describe. Especially the breakfast buffet. Seriously, don't get your hopes up. The selection is pitifully small, and the taste is bland as water, not at all what you'd expect from a four-star hotel[6]. In the end, I had to survive on fried eggs and fruit...
Also, while the room has a great view, the maintenance is just so-so. I heard some of the lower-floor rooms can be damp and dark[7], so you should be careful when booking. As for the price, it's not cheap[8], but the facilities are all there, so it just depends on whether you think it's worth it.

If you're on a company trip or with your whole family, and you're looking for a convenient, hassle-free, all-in-one spot, then this place with its complete facilities is indeed an option. But if you're just looking for a quiet place to chill... emmm, you might want to pray you don't run into a company's annual party
- Attention, light sleepers: Before booking, definitely call the hotel to ask if there are any large team-building or outdoor events scheduled! If so, beg them to give you a quiet room far away from the pool and the main square.
- Room selection secret: You absolutely have to choose a room facing Rawa Pening lake! The view is worth the price. Definitely avoid those dark and damp lower-floor rooms.
- About the food: Just go with the flow for breakfast, don't expect too much. But if you see that fried noodle cart (Mie Jawa in Cart) at night, promise me, you have to go for it!
- Money-saving tip: Things like the kids' playground and the SPA have extra charges, so ask before you go. During Ramadan, it seems they have a 99K buffet package, which looks like a pretty good deal[9].
